===Subdivisions=== The city is divided into six divisions, four of which are on Malé Island: Henveiru, Galolhu, Maafannu, and MacchanGoalhi. The nearby island of Villimalé, formerly a tourist resort and before that a prison, is the fifth division. The sixth division is Hulhumalé, an artificial island settled since 2004. In addition, the airport Island Hulhulé is part of the city. Plans have been made to develop the Gulhifalhu reef, implementation began in 2008. {| |- style="vertical-align:top;" | {| class="wikitable sortable" style="margin:1em auto;" |-style="background: #CCC;" ! align="right"|Nr. || align="left"|Division || align="right"| Area<br />(km<sup>2</sup>)|| align="right"|Population<br />(2014 census) |- |align="right"| 1||Henveiru|| align="center" |0.591|| align="center"|27,254 |- |align="right"| 2||Galolhu|| align="center" |0.276|| align="center"|23,062 |- |align="right"| 3||Machchangolhi|| align="center" |0.326|| align="center"|22,745 |- |align="right"| 4||Maafannu|| align="center" |0.759|| align="center"|36,437 |-style="background: #DDD;" | class="sortbottom" |align="right"| 1-4|| Malé (island) || align="center"|1.952|| align="center"|109,498 |- |align="right"| 5|| Villimalé || align="center"|0.318|| align="center"|7,516 |- |align="right"| 6|| Hulhumalé || align="center"|4.0|| align="center" |14,843 |- |align="right"| 7|| Hulhulé || align="center"|3.0|| align="center" |- |-style="background: #DDD;" | class="sortbottom" |align="right"| 5-7|| Atolls|| align="center"|7.318|| align="center" |22,359 |-style="background: #DDD;" | class="sortbottom" | align="right"| ||Malé (city)|| align="center"| 9.27 || align="center"|133,412 |} |<div style="position: relative; {};"> </div> |} The island of Malé is the eighth most densely populated island in the world, and it is the 160th most populous island in the world.
