Blaine]] and Stalwart supporters of [[Ulysses S. Arthur]], a fellow Stalwart and close Conkling friend.<ref name="Doenecke"/> Conkling also advised Arthur to decline, but Arthur accepted; Garfield and he were narrowly elected over their Democratic opponents.<ref name="Doenecke"/>
