In January 1886, Johnson married Minne L. McNeal (1869–1947). The couple had two sons: Hiram W. "Jack" Johnson Jr. (1886–1959), and Archibald "Archie" McNeal Johnson (1890–1933). Both sons practiced law in California and served in the army. Hiram Jr. was a veteran of [[World War I]], and attained the rank of lieutenant colonel in the [[United States Army Air Corps|Army Air Corps]] while stationed at [[Fort Mason]] in San Francisco during [[World War II]].
