The [[Hundred Years' Croatian–Ottoman War|Ottoman Empire's repeated incursions]] into Croatia in the 15th and 16th centuries posed the first major existential threat to the script's survival. Because knowledge of Glagolitic became rare even in academia, most efforts surrounding Glagolitic manuscripts in the [[late modern period]] focused on transliteration.
