Germans had dreamed of colonial imperialism since 1848.{{Sfnp|Fitzpatrick|2007|pp=135–161}} Although Bismarck had little interest in acquiring overseas possessions, most Germans were enthusiastic, and by 1884 he had acquired [[German New Guinea]].{{Sfnp|Ciarlo|2008|pp=285–298}} By the 1890s, German colonial expansion in Asia and the Pacific ([[Jiaozhou Bay]] and [[Tianjin]] in China, the [[Mariana Islands|Marianas]], the [[Caroline Islands]], Samoa) led to frictions with the UK, Russia, Japan, and the US.
