=====Large intestine===== Large intestine The large intestine forms an arch starting at the cecum and ending at the rectum and anal canal. It also includes the appendix, which is attached to the cecum. Its length is about 1.5 m, and the area of the mucosa in an adult human is about 2 m2. The longest part of the large intestine is the colon whose main function is to absorb water and salts. The large intestine begins at the cecum, where the appendix is located. This is also the start of the colon as the ascending colon in the back wall of the abdomen. At the right colic flexure (hepatic flexure) (the flexed portion of the ascending and transverse colon) it runs across the abdomen in the transverse colon, passing below the diaphragm. At the left colic flexure (splenic flexure) the flexed portion of the transverse and descending colon, it descends down the left side of the abdomen. It reaches the sigmoid colon which is a loop of the colon closest to the rectum and continues to the rectum and anal canal.
