Elephant 6 bands explore a variety of [[music genre]]s, including [[indie rock]], [[synth-pop]], and [[twee pop]].<ref>{{harvnb|Bloom|2019}}; {{harvnb|Gilmer|Murray|2012}}; {{harvnb|Shook|2013}}</ref> A common interest for nearly every associated band, however, is [[psychedelic pop]] of the 1960s.{{sfn|Dillon|2012|p=136}} Bands such as [[the Beach Boys]], [[the Beatles]], and [[the Zombies]] are important influences for Elephant 6 groups like [[the Apples in Stereo]], [[Beulah (band)|Beulah]], and [[the Olivia Tremor Control]].<ref>{{harvnb|Gilmer|Murray|2012}}; {{harvnb|Anon.|2009}}; {{harvnb|Anon.|2016}}</ref> Elephant 6's [[de facto]] leader [[Robert Schneider]] notes the particular influence of the Beach Boys' unfinished album ''[[Smile (The Beach Boys album)|Smile]]'', calling it the "[[Holy Grail]]" for many members of the collective. He notes how he and other members were obsessed with Beach Boys albums, and attempted to create the type of music they felt would have been included in ''Smile''.{{sfn|Dillon|2012|p=136}}

Most Elephant 6 members are [[anti-consumerism]] and possess a [[DIY ethic]].<ref>{{harvnb|Cannon|2019}}; {{harvnb|Shook|2013}}</ref> Their music sometimes features intentionally [[lo-fi|low quality]] production, and bands may experiment with unique recording methods; for example, ''Music from the Unrealized Film Script: Dusk at Cubist Castle'' features recording techniques such as [[Cassette tape|tape]] manipulation and [[sound collage]]s.<ref>{{harvnb|Anon.|2016}}; {{harvnb|Aston|Beaumont|2011}}</ref> Schneider notes his hatred of both indie music and modern pop music, and said that his vision for Elephant 6 is a "perfect pop world," untarnished by commercial interests.{{sfn|Aston|Beaumont|2011}}
