==Demographics==
As of the 2000 [[United States Census]],<ref name="GR2">{{cite web |url=https://www.census.gov |publisher=[[United States Census Bureau]] |access-date=January 31, 2008 |title=U.S. Census website }}</ref> there were 24,071 people, 10,068 households, and 6,503 families residing in the town.  The population density was {{convert|711.0|PD/sqmi|PD/km2|sp=us|adj=off}}. There were 10,694 housing units at an average density of {{convert|315.9|/sqmi|/km2|sp=us|adj=off}}. The racial makeup of the town was 89.70% [[White (U.S. Census)|White]], 4.89% [[African American (U.S. Census)|African American]], 2.98% [[Asian (U.S. Census)|Asian]], 0.56% [[Native American (U.S. Census)|Native American]], 0.02% [[Pacific Islander (U.S. Census)|Pacific Islander]], 0.26% from [[Race (United States Census)|other races]], and 1.58% from two or more races. [[Hispanic (U.S. Census)|Hispanic]] or [[Latino (U.S. Census)|Latino]] of any race were 1.35% of the population.

There were 10,068 households, out of which 30.0% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 50.2% were [[Marriage|married couples]] living together, 10.7% had a female householder with no husband present, and 35.4% were non-families. 30.9% of all households were made up of individuals, and 13.4% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.35 and the average family size was 2.94.

The age distribution was as follows: 24.1% of residents were under the age of 18, 5.6% from 18 to 24, 27.0% from 25 to 44, 25.0% from 45 to 64, and 18.3% who were 65 years of age or older.  The median age was 41 years. For every 100 females, there were 91.6 males.  For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 88.3 males.

The median income for a household in the town was $46,759, and the median income for a family was $60,325. Males had a median income of $45,926 versus $29,797 for females. The [[per capita income]] for the town was $29,198.  About 4.7% of families and 7.2% of the population were below the [[poverty line]], including 9.4% of those under age 18 and 3.7% of those age 65 or over.

As of July 2009, the population was 24,422,<ref>{{cite web|title=DeWitt New York|url=http://www.city-data.com/city/De-Witt-New-York.html|publisher=city-data.com}}</ref> up 1.5% from 2000, with the average household income at $57,273. The average condo value in 2009 was $142,735.
