The population density was {{convert|1,299.2|PD/sqmi|PD/km2|sp=us|adj=off}}. There were 24,402 housing units at an average density of {{convert|538.2|/mi2|/km2|disp=preunit|units&nbsp;|units|}}. The racial makeup of the city was 77.4% [[Race (United States Census)|White]], 15.6% [[Race (United States Census)|Black]] or [[Race (United States Census)|African American]], 0.4% [[Race (United States Census)|Native American]], 1.9% [[Race (United States Census)|Asian]], 0.1% [[Race (United States Census)|Pacific Islander]], 2.4% from [[Race (United States Census)|other races]], and 2.2% from two or more races. 5.1% of the population were [[Race (United States Census)|Hispanic]] or [[Race (United States Census)|Latino]] of any race.

There were 23,205 households, out of which 33.1% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 43.2% were [[Marriage|married couples]] living together, 12.8% had a female householder with no husband present, and 39.8% were non-families. 27.0% of all households were made up of individuals, and 7.0% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.45 and the average family size was 3.01.

In the city, the population was spread out, with 22.7% under the age of 18, 22.9% from 18 to 24, 27.2% from 25 to 44, 18.5% from 45 to 64, and 8.7% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 27.3 years. There were 51.7% females and 48.3% males. For ages under 18, there were 49.2% females and 50.8% males.
