Shortly after the [[French Revolution]] (1789), the [[French First Republic]] prohibited official use of, and enacted discriminating policies against, the regional languages of France, such as Catalan, [[Alsatian language|Alsatian]], [[Breton language|Breton]], [[Occitan language|Occitan]], [[Flemish dialects|Flemish]], and [[Basque language|Basque]].
