=== 20th century === Buxton held a base for British and Canadian troops in [[World War I|the First World War]]. Granville Military Hospital was set up at the Buxton Hydropathic Hotel, with the [[Palace Hotel, Buxton|Palace Hotel]] annexed. The author [[Vera Brittain]] trained as a [[Voluntary Aid Detachment]] nurse at the [[Devonshire Royal Hospital|Devonshire Hospital]] in 1915.
