On April 15, 2013, the [[2013 Boston Marathon|Boston Marathon]] was still in progress at 2:49{{nbsp}}p.m. [[Eastern Time Zone|EDT]] (nearly three hours after the winner crossed the finish line), when two homemade bombs were set off about {{convert|200|yd|m}} apart on Boylston Street, in approximately the last {{convert|225|yd|m|sigfig=1}} of the course. The race was halted, preventing many from finishing.<ref name=cnn/><ref name=explosions/> Three spectators were killed and an estimated 264 were injured.<ref name="globe-number-injured"/> Entrants who completed at least half the course and did not finish due to the bombing were given automatic entry in 2014.<ref name=Stableford/> In 2015, [[Dzhokhar Tsarnaev]], one of the perpetrators of the bombing, was found guilty of 30 federal offenses in connection with the attack and was sentenced to [[Capital punishment in the United States|death]].
