As of the [[2020 United States census|2020 census]], (some information from the [[American Community Survey|2022 American Community Survey]]) there were 43,363 people, 13,882 households, and 9,455 families residing in the community. The sharp decrease in population from 54,994 in 2000 was due to the splitting off of the CDP's western portion to form the [[Wakefield, Fairfax County, Virginia|Wakefield]] and [[Woodburn, Fairfax County, Virginia|Woodburn]] CDPs. The [[population density]] in 2020 was {{convert|5,516.9|/mi2|/km2|disp=preunit|people&nbsp;|people|}}. There were 14,447 housing units at an average density of {{convert|1,838.0|/mi2|/km2|disp=preunit|units&nbsp;|units|}}. The racial makeup of the community was 44.7% [[White American|White]], 21.9% [[Asian American|Asian]], 9.0% [[African American|Black]], 0.8% [[Native Americans in the United States|American Indian]], 0.3% [[Pacific Islander American|Pacific Islander]], 18.8% from [[Race and ethnicity in the United States census|other races]], and 4.5% from two or more races. [[Hispanic and Latino Americans|Hispanics and Latinos]] of any race were 32.1% of the population.<ref name="GR2" /> Annandale is home to a large working-class White community, and is one of the few remaining areas in Fairfax County where the group has a presence.

There were 13,882 households, out of which 31.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 48.7% were married couples living together, 13.7% had a female householder with no husband present, and 31.9% were non-families. 22.9% of all households were made up of individuals, and 10.9% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 3.09, and the average family size was 3.55.<ref name="GR2" />

The age distribution of the community was 22.0% under the age of 18, 9.7% from 18 to 24, 30.2% from 25 to 44, 25.4% from 45 to 64, and 13.8% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 37.3 years. The gender makeup of the community was 49.6% male and 50.4% female.<ref name="GR2" />

The median income for a household in the community was $96,533, and the median income for a family was $108,079. Males had median earnings of $42,552 versus $30,979 for females. The community's [[per capita income]] was $40,361. About 6.9% of families and 9.8% of the population were below the [[poverty line]], including 14.6% of those under age 18 and 9.0% of those age 65 or over.<ref name="GR2" />
