===Mechanical stimulation===
Mechanical stimulation of angiogenesis is not well characterized. There is a significant amount of controversy with regard to [[shear stress]] acting on capillaries to cause angiogenesis, although current knowledge suggests that increased muscle contractions may increase angiogenesis.<ref name ="Prior2004">{{cite journal | vauthors = Prior BM, Yang HT, Terjung RL | title = What makes vessels grow with exercise training? | journal = Journal of Applied Physiology | volume = 97 | issue = 3 | pages = 1119–1128 | date = September 2004 | pmid = 15333630 | doi = 10.1152/japplphysiol.00035.2004 }}</ref> This may be due to an increase in the production of [[nitric oxide]] during exercise. Nitric oxide results in vasodilation of blood vessels.
