* A [[1980 Surinamese coup d'état|military coup]] is launched in [[Suriname]] on 25 February 1980; the country's politics are dominated by the military until 1991.
* [[Nigeria]] suffered military coups in [[1983 Nigerian coup d'état|1983]] and [[1985 Nigerian coup d'état|1985]].
* [[Sitiveni Rabuka]] staged two [[1987 Fijian coups d'état|military coups in Fiji]] in 1987, and declared the country a [[republic]] the same year.
