=== United Nations Declaration === The [[Declaration on the Elimination of Violence Against Women]] was adopted by the United Nations in 1993. It defines [[violence against women]] as "any act of gender-based violence that results in, or is likely to result in, physical, sexual or psychological harm or suffering to women, including threats of such acts, coercion or arbitrary deprivation of liberty, whether occurring in public or in private life."<ref>{{cite web|url=http://www.un-documents.net/a48r104.htm|title=A/RES/48/104 β Declaration on the Elimination of Violence against Women β UN Documents: Gathering a body of global agreements|author=United Nations General Assembly|work=un-documents.net|access-date=8 October 2015}}</ref> This resolution established that women have a right to be free from violence. As a consequence of the resolution, in 1999, the General Assembly declared the day of 25 November to be the [[International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women]]. Article 2 of The Declaration on the Elimination of Violence Against Women outlines several forms of violence against women: <blockquote>Article Two: Violence against women shall be understood to encompass, but not be limited to, the following: : (a) Physical, sexual and psychological violence occurring in the family, including [[Battery (crime)|battering]], sexual abuse of female children in the household, [[dowry]]-related violence, [[marital rape]], [[female genital mutilation]] and other traditional practices harmful to women, non-spousal violence and violence related to [[Sexual exploitation|exploitation]]; : (b) Physical, sexual and [[psychological abuse|psychological violence]] occurring within the general community, including [[rape]], [[sexual abuse]], [[sexual harassment]] and intimidation at work, in educational institutions and elsewhere, [[Human trafficking|trafficking]] in women and [[forced prostitution]]; : (c) Physical, sexual and psychological violence perpetrated or condoned by the State, wherever it occurs.</blockquote>
