The Spread Eagle Walk shopping centre was constructed as a coaching inn in the late 17th century.<ref name=Berry_1992_p9>{{harvnb|Berry|1992|p=9}}</ref> The main hotel building has two storeys with an attic and basement. The external [[stucco]] finish and [[sash window]]s are later additions.<ref>{{NHLE|num=1028564|desc=The Spread Eagle Hotel and No. 89|access-date=24 June 2021|fewer-links=yes}}</ref> The distinctive black eagle sculptures above the two porticos are thought to date from the mid-late 19th century.
