===Professional sports teams===

The [[Hartford Whalers]] of the [[National Hockey League]] played in Hartford from 1975 to 1997 at the [[Hartford Civic Center]]. They departed to [[Raleigh, North Carolina]], after disputes with the state over the construction of a new arena, and they are now known as the [[Carolina Hurricanes]]. A baseball team known as the Hartfords (or [[Hartford Dark Blues]]) played in the [[National Association of Professional Base Ball Players|National Association]] from 1874 to 1875, before becoming charter members of the [[National League (baseball)|National League]] in 1876. The team moved to [[Brooklyn, New York]], and then disbanded one season later.
