Advertising on public television and radio started in 1967 but was tightly regulated. Initially there was only a small advertising segment before and after news broadcasts. In the late 1980s, commercial breaks of 1 to 3 minutes were allowed between programmes. Advertising on Sundays was not permitted until 1991.

within the European Conference of Postal and Telecommunications Administrations (CEPT).</ref> Income tax was increased and the maximum duration  of commercial breaks was extended to 5 and 7&nbsp;minutes.<ref name="ero" /> The [[Netherlands Public Broadcasting]] is now funded by government subsidy and advertising. The amount of time used by commercial breaks may not exceed 15 per cent of daily broadcasting time or 10 per cent of total annual broadcasting time.
