During the [[Greco-Turkish War (1919–1922)]], the retreating [[Hellenic Army|Greek Army]] carried out a scorched-earth policy while it was fleeing from [[Anatolia]] in the final phase of the war.{{sfn|Fisher|1959}}  The historian [[Sydney Nettleton Fisher]] wrote, "The Greek army in retreat pursued a burned-earth policy and committed every known outrage against defenceless Turkish villagers in its path".{{sfn|Fisher|1959}}
