In May 2022, during a New York to Frankfurt flight, the captain alerted Lufthansa security that some passengers had failed to follow crew instructions requiring the [[Face masks during the COVID-19 pandemic|wearing of masks]] and barring gathering. Lufthansa said it made the payment to avoid litigation but denied discrimination, blaming the incident on "an unfortunate series of inaccurate communications".<ref name="sherman"/>
