In 2001, Ryder began a four-year career hiatus. In December 2001, Ryder was arrested for shoplifting, which made it difficult for her to be insured for further film projects. [[Woody Allen]] wanted to cast [[Robert Downey Jr.]] and Ryder in his film ''[[Melinda and Melinda]]'' (2004), but was unable to do so because "I couldn't get insurance on them ...
