He was previously married from 1989 to 1997 to Kate Chancellor. They have two children, a son, Alexis, and a daughter, Madeleine. Self has stated that he has abstained from [[Recreational drug use|drugs]], except for [[caffeine]] and [[nicotine]], since 1998.
