On 16 May 1957, Funk was granted [[compassionate release]] because of ill health, making last-minute visits to Speer, [[Rudolf Hess]], and [[Baldur von Schirach]] before leaving the prison.<ref>{{cite book |last=Bird |first=Eugene |title=The Loneliest Man in the World |publisher=Secker & Warburg |year=1974 |isbn=0-436-04290-8 |location=London |page=121}}</ref> On 31 May 1960, Funk died of complication from [[diabetes]] in [[Düsseldorf]], [[West Germany]].
