===Golden rice=== Shiva strongly opposes [[golden rice]], a breed of rice that has been genetically engineered to biosynthesise beta-carotene, a precursor of vitamin A. Shiva contends that Golden Rice is more harmful than beneficial in her explanation of what she calls the "Golden Rice hoax": "Unfortunately, Vitamin A rice is a hoax, and will bring further dispute to plant genetic engineering where public relations exercises seem to have replaced science in promotion of untested, unproven and unnecessary technology... This is a recipe for creating hunger and malnutrition, not solving it."<ref>{{cite web |author1=Dr. Vandana Shiva |title=THE "GOLDEN RICE" HOAX β When Public Relations replaces Science |url=http://online.sfsu.edu/rone/GEessays/goldenricehoax.html |publisher=[[San Francisco State University]] |archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20180821091432/http://online.sfsu.edu/rone/GEessays/goldenricehoax.html |archive-date=21 August 2018 |date=29 June 2000 |url-status=dead}}</ref> Adrian Dubock says that golden rice is as cheap as other rice and vitamin A deficiency is the greatest reason for blindness and causes 28% of global preschool child mortality.<ref>[https://www.theguardian.com/commentisfree/2013/nov/04/response-zac-goldsmith-golden-rice-gm-food No, Zac Goldsmith, golden rice is not 'evil GM'.
