As early as April 1941, Camus had been working on the novel, as evidenced in his diaries in which he wrote down a few ideas on "the redeeming plague".<ref>Camus, Albert, ''Carnets I, Mai 1935 - février 1942'', Paris, Gallimard, 2013, 234 p.
