The racial makeup of the county was 97% [[Race (United States Census)|White]], 1.2% [[Race (United States Census)|Black]] or [[Race (United States Census)|African American]], 0.1% [[Race (United States Census)|Native American]], 0.42% [[Race (United States Census)|Asian]], and 0.07% [[Race (United States Census)|Pacific Islander]]. Two percent of the population were [[Race (United States Census)|Hispanic]] or [[Race (United States Census)|Latino]]. US Veterans – 2,681. The [[population density]] was {{convert|113|/mi2|/km2|disp=preunit|people&nbsp;|people|}}. There were 14,890 housing units at an average density of {{convert|45|/mi2|/km2|adj=pre|units&nbsp;}}. The racial makeup of the county was 97.93% White, 0.82% Black or African American, 0.05% Native American, 0.42% Asian, 0.01% Pacific Islander. 0.98% of the population were [[Race (United States Census)|Hispanic]] or [[Race (United States Census)|Latino]] of any race. 48.2% were of [[German Americans|German]], 17.2% [[American ancestry|American]] and 5.5% [[English Americans|English]] ancestry.

There were 13,654 households, out of which 32.10% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 62.00% were [[Marriage|married couples]] living together, 7.40% had a female householder with no husband present, and 26.90% were non-families. 22.40% of all households were made up of individuals, and 10.30% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.58 and the average family size was 3.02.

In the county, the population was spread out, with 24.00% under the age of 18, 11.20% from 18 to 24, 27.40% from 25 to 44, 23.30% from 45 to 64, and 14.00% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 37 years. For every 100 females there were 95.60 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 93.10 males.
