Lam next took a break from filmmaking after finding dissatisfaction with the filming environment in Hong Kong after ''Finding Mr. Perfect'' did poorly in the box office.<ref name="fc-interview" /> Lam also stated that he wanted to spend more time with his family and "above all, to observe people and learn more about them. I wanted to seek resources, material, and subjects that were worth making into films."<ref name="fc-interview" />
