===2000 census===
As of the [[2000 United States Census|census of 2000]],<ref name="GR2" /> there were 2,852 people, 1,196 households, and 772 families living in the city.  The population density was {{convert|942.8|PD/sqmi|PD/km2|sp=us|adj=off}}.  There were 1,246 housing units at an average density of {{convert|411.9|/sqmi|/km2|sp=us|adj=off}}.  The racial makeup of the city was 96.49% [[White (U.S. Census)|White]], 0.14% [[African American (U.S. Census)|African American]], 1.16% [[Native American (U.S. Census)|Native American]], 0.53% [[Asian (U.S. Census)|Asian]], 0.28% from [[Race (United States Census)|other races]], and 1.40% from two or more races. [[Hispanic (U.S. Census)|Hispanic]] or [[Latino (U.S. Census)|Latino]] of any race were 0.74% of the population. 19.8% were of [[Germans|German]], 17.9% [[Norwegians|Norwegian]], 10.3% [[Swedish people|Swedish]], 7.3% [[French people|French]], 7.0% [[Finns|Finnish]], 6.2% [[Polish people|Polish]], 6.0% [[Irish people|Irish]] and 5.4% [[Italians|Italian]] ancestry.

There were 1,196 households, out of which 28.6% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 51.5% were [[Marriage|married couples]] living together, 10.6% had a female householder with no husband present, and 35.4% were non-families. 30.8% of all households were made up of individuals, and 17.1% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older.  The average household size was 2.38 and the average family size was 2.99.

In the city, the population was spread out, with 24.0% under the age of 18, 9.4% from 18 to 24, 27.3% from 25 to 44, 23.6% from 45 to 64, and 15.8% who were 65 years of age or older.  The median age was 38 years. For every 100 females, there were 86.6 males.  For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 85.8 males.

The median income for a household in the city was $38,322, and the median income for a family was $49,875. Males had a median income of $33,583 versus $22,035 for females. The [[per capita income]] for the city was $18,851.  About 3.2% of families and 5.0% of the population were below the [[poverty line]], including 5.5% of those under age 18 and 5.9% of those age 65 or over.
