==Geography== Oxford is in central Lafayette County in northern Mississippi, about 75 mi south-southeast of Memphis, Tennessee. According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 69.2 km2, of which 68.9 km2 are land and 0.2 sqkm, or 0.35%, is water. The campus of the University of Mississippi, west of downtown, is an unincorporated area surrounded by the city. The city is located in the North Central Hills region of Mississippi. The region is known for its heavily forested hills made up of red clay. The area is higher and greater in relief than areas to the west (such as the Mississippi Delta or loess bluffs along the Delta), but lower in elevation than areas in northeast Mississippi. The changes in elevation can be noticed when traveling on the Highway 6 bypass, since the east-west highway tends to transect many of the north-south ridges. Downtown Oxford sits on one of these ridges and the University of Mississippi sits on another one, while the main commercial corridors on either side of the city sit in valleys. Oxford is located at the confluence of highways from eight directions: Mississippi Highway 6 (now co-signed with US-278) runs west 25 mi to Batesville and east 31 mi to Pontotoc; Highway 7 runs north 30 mi to Holly Springs and south 18 mi to Water Valley. Highway 30 goes northeast 33 mi to New Albany; Highway 334 ("Old Highway 6") leads southeast 19 mi to Toccopola; Taylor Road leads southwest 9 mi to Taylor; and Highway 314 ("Old Sardis Road") leads northwest, formerly to Sardis but now 11 mi to the Clear Creek Recreation Area on Sardis Lake. The streets in the downtown area follow a grid pattern with two naming conventions. Many of the north-south streets are numbered from west to east, beginning at the old railroad depot, with numbers from four to nineteen. The place of "Twelfth Street", however, is taken by North and South Lamar Boulevard (formerly North Street and South Street). The east-west avenues are named for the U.S. presidents in chronological order from north to south, from Washington to Cleveland; here again, there are gaps: there is no street for John Quincy Adams, who shares a last name with John Adams; "Polk Avenue" is replaced by University Avenue; and "Arthur Avenue" is lacking. ===Climate=== Oxford has a humid subtropical climate (Cfa) and is in hardiness zone 7b. {{Weather box |location = Oxford, Mississippi (University of Mississippi) 1991β2020, extremes 1893βpresent |single line = Y |collapsed = yes |Jan record high F = 80 |Feb record high F = 84 |Mar record high F = 91 |Apr record high F = 93 |May record high F = 98 |Jun record high F = 104 |Jul record high F = 108 |Aug record high F = 107 |Sep record high F = 111 |Oct record high F = 98 |Nov record high F = 89 |Dec record high F = 81 |year record high F = 110 |Jan avg record high F = 72.1 |Feb avg record high F = 75.2 |Mar avg record high F = 82.2 |Apr avg record high F = 87.0 |May avg record high F = 90.8 |Jun avg record high F = 94.9 |Jul avg record high F = 97.1 |Aug avg record high F = 97.7 |Sep avg record high F = 94.8 |Oct avg record high F = 89.4 |Nov avg record high F = 80.1 |Dec avg record high F = 72.9 |year avg record high F = 98.8 |Jan high F = 52.3 |Feb high F = 57.1 |Mar high F = 65.8 |Apr high F = 74.2 |May high F = 82.0 |Jun high F = 88.6 |Jul high F = 91.3 |Aug high F = 91.0 |Sep high F = 86.2 |Oct high F = 76.1 |Nov high F = 64.3 |Dec high F = 55.0 |year high F = 73.7 |Jan mean F = 41.4 |Feb mean F = 45.4 |Mar mean F = 53.5 |Apr mean F = 61.6 |May mean F = 70.4 |Jun mean F = 77.7 |Jul mean F = 80.7 |Aug mean F = 79.8 |Sep mean F = 73.9 |Oct mean F = 62.6 |Nov mean F = 51.9 |Dec mean F = 44.2 |year mean F = 61.9 |Jan low F = 30.6 |Feb low F = 33.8 |Mar low F = 41.2 |Apr low F = 48.9 |May low F = 58.9 |Jun low F = 66.8 |Jul low F = 70.2 |Aug low F = 68.6 |Sep low F = 61.6 |Oct low F = 49.2 |Nov low F = 39.5 |Dec low F = 33.3 |year low F = 50.2 |Jan avg record low F = 12.1 |Feb avg record low F = 17.1 |Mar avg record low F = 22.5 |Apr avg record low F = 31.5 |May avg record low F = 42.2 |Jun avg record low F = 55.3 |Jul avg record low F = 61.1 |Aug avg record low F = 59.3 |Sep avg record low F = 45.7 |Oct avg record low F = 32.2 |Nov avg record low F = 22.1 |Dec avg record low F = 17.4 |year avg record low F = 9.7 |Jan record low F = -13 |Feb record low F = -10 |Mar record low F = 7 |Apr record low F = 21 |May record low F = 31 |Jun record low F = 43 |Jul record low F = 50 |Aug record low F = 48 |Sep record low F = 32 |Oct record low F = 20 |Nov record low F = 6 |Dec record low F = -10 |year record low F = -13 |precipitation colour = green |Jan precipitation inch = 5.13 |Feb precipitation inch = 5.82 |Mar precipitation inch = 5.61 |Apr precipitation inch = 6.30 |May precipitation inch = 5.35 |Jun precipitation inch = 5.22 |Jul precipitation inch = 4.35 |Aug precipitation inch = 3.90 |Sep precipitation inch = 3.99 |Oct precipitation inch = 4.10 |Nov precipitation inch = 4.30 |Dec precipitation inch = 6.45 |year precipitation inch = 60.52 |Jan snow inch = 0.8 |Feb snow inch = 0.2 |Mar snow inch = 0.1 |Apr snow inch = 0.0 |May snow inch = 0.0 |Jun snow inch = 0.0 |Jul snow inch = 0.0 |Aug snow inch = 0.0 |Sep snow inch = 0.0 |Oct snow inch = 0.0 |Nov snow inch = 0.0 |Dec snow inch = 0.1 |year snow inch = 1.2 |unit precipitation days = 0.01 in |Jan precipitation days = 12.0 |Feb precipitation days = 10.8 |Mar precipitation days = 11.7 |Apr precipitation days = 10.3 |May precipitation days = 11.0 |Jun precipitation days = 10.2 |Jul precipitation days = 10.0 |Aug precipitation days = 8.8 |Sep precipitation days = 7.4 |Oct precipitation days = 7.9 |Nov precipitation days = 9.8 |Dec precipitation days = 12.2 |year precipitation days = 122.1 |unit snow days = 0.1 in |Jan snow days = 0.6 |Feb snow days = 0.4 |Mar snow days = 0.1 |Apr snow days = 0.0 |May snow days = 0.0 |Jun snow days = 0.0 |Jul snow days = 0.0 |Aug snow days = 0.0 |Sep snow days = 0.0 |Oct snow days = 0.0 |Nov snow days = 0.0 |Dec snow days = 0.3 |year snow days = 1.4 |source 1 = NOAA }}
