Caves in the Zagros Mountains adjacent to the north side of the Nineveh Plains were used as [[PPNA]] settlements, most famously [[Shanidar Cave]]. Nineveh itself was founded as early as 6000&nbsp;BC during the late [[Neolithic]] period.
