===Japanese occupation===

After its occupation, Nichols Field became a fighter base for the [[Imperial Japanese Navy Air Service]].  It was attacked on several occasions by FEAF fighters.  On the night of 26/27 January 1942 Fighters from [[Bataan Airfield]], bombed and strafed Nichols during the night inflicting considerable damage on Japanese aircraft and fuel storage.  It was also attacked by [[B-17 Flying Fortress]]es from Australia, on 12 April 1942 staging though [[Del Monte Field]] on Mindanao.<ref name="PW">[http://pacificwrecks.com/airfields/philippines/nichols/missions-nielson.html American Missions Against Nichols Field]</ref>

After the capitulation of American forces in the Philippines, on 19 May 1942 the Japanese had American prisoner of war (POW) pilots fly two P-40 Warhawks and a PT-17 Stearman biplane from Davao Airfield to Nichols. One of the P-40s was delayed due to bad weather and landed at a small airstrip en route.<ref name="PW2">[http://pacificwrecks.com/airfields/philippines/nichols/  Pacific Wrecks Nichols Field]</ref> It was used as a Prisoner of War Camp ("Philippine Military Prison Camp 306")<ref>[http://www.west-point.org/family/japanese-pow/Camps-Philippines.htm LIST of POW CAMPS in the Philippine Islands]</ref> and also used as a combat airfield by the IJNAS 1021st [[Kōkūtai]] flying [[Mitsubishi G4M]] medium bombers.<ref name="PW2"/>
