==Presidents== The president is the head of the academy, elected by a majority vote of the membership to serve in this position for a term to be determined by the governing Council, not to exceed six years, and may be re-elected for a second term. Terms usually start on July 1 and ends on June 30. The academy has had 22 presidents since its foundation.<ref>{{Cite web |title=A Selection of Highlights from the History of the National Academy of Sciences, 1863-2005 |url=https://www.nasonline.org/about-nas/history/highlights/ |website=NAS |first1=Frederick |last1=Seitz |access-date=22 November 2023 |archive-date=November 23, 2023 |archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20231123024513/https://www.nasonline.org/about-nas/history/highlights/ |url-status=live }}</ref> The current president is [[geophysics|geophysicist]] [[Marcia McNutt|Marcia K.
