While the different NTFS versions are for the most part fully [[forward compatibility|forward]]- and [[backward compatibility|backward-compatible]], there are technical considerations for mounting newer NTFS volumes in older versions of Microsoft Windows. This affects dual-booting, and external portable hard drives.
