Monolayers have a multitude of applications both at the air-water and at air-solid interphases.

Monolayers are frequently encountered in [[biology]]. A [[micelle]] is a monolayer, and the [[phospholipid]] [[lipid bilayer]] structure of [[cell membrane|biological membrane]]s is technically two monolayers.
