Horkheimer continued to teach at the university until his retirement in the mid-1960s. In 1953, he was awarded the [[Goethe Plaque of the City of Frankfurt]], and was later named an honorary citizen of Frankfurt for life.<ref name="stanford">{{cite web|url=http://plato.stanford.edu/entries/horkheimer/|title=Max Horkheimer (Stanford Encyclopedia of Philosophy)|publisher=plato.stanford.edu|access-date=14 June 2015}}</ref> He returned to the United States in 1954 and 1959 to lecture as a frequent visiting professor at the [[University of Chicago]].
