Barrès was a noted hispanophile.<ref name=gcuevas /> Influenced by the [[Romanticism|romantic]] mythification of Spain, he described the country as "an Africa leaving your soul with a sort of furor so fast as chilli does in your mouth".<ref>{{Cite journal|last=Archilés Cardona|year=2018|title=¿Materia de España?
