The southwest part of the city drains to Little Indian Creek, a tributary of the [[Little River (Oconee River tributary)|Little River]], which flows to the Oconee north of [[Milledgeville, Georgia|Milledgeville]]. [[Interstate 20 in Georgia|Interstate 20]], [[U.S. Route 129 in Georgia|U.S. Route 129]], [[U.S. Route 441 in Georgia|U.S. Route 441]], and [[U.S. Route 278 in Georgia|U.S. Route 278]] pass through Madison. I-20 serves the city from exits 113 and 114, leading east {{convert|90|mi}} to [[Augusta, Georgia|Augusta]] and west {{convert|57|mi}} to [[Atlanta]]. U.S. 278 runs through the center of the city, leading east {{convert|19|mi}} to [[Greensboro, Georgia|Greensboro]] and west {{convert|24|mi}} to [[Covington, Georgia|Covington]]. U.S. 129/441 run through the city together, leading north {{convert|29|mi}} to [[Athens, Georgia|Athens]] and south {{convert|22|mi}} to [[Eatonton, Georgia|Eatonton]].
