===Galicia–Volhynia Wars=== During the [[Galicia–Volhynia Wars|wars over the succession of Galicia-Volhynia Principality]] in 1339 King [[Casimir III the Great|Casimir III of Poland]] undertook an expedition and conquered Lviv in 1340, burning down the [[Lviv High Castle|old princely castle]].<ref name="Meyers Konversations-Lexikon" /> Poland ultimately gained control over Lviv and the adjacent region in 1349. From then on the population was subjected to attempts to both [[Polonization|Polonize]] and [[Catholicisation|Catholicize]] the population.<ref>Jacob Caro: ''Geschichte Polens''.
