On 27 April 1972, the national park was reconstituted under the ''[[National Parks and Wildlife Act 1972]]'' in respect to the following land - "''Hundred Flinders, Section 2, 3, 5, 6, 12-14, Smith Island, Hopkins Island, Lewis Island, Little Island, Owen Island, Albatross Island, Liguanea Island, Rabbit Island (being section 395, North out of Hundreds), Curta Rocks (and) Hundred Flinders, Section 4.''"<ref name=NPWact>{{cite journal |title= No. 56 of 1972 (National Parks and Wildlife Act, 1972) |journal= The South Australian Government Gazette |date= 27 April 1972 |pages= 660 & 699 |url= http://www9.austlii.edu.au/cgi-bin/viewdoc/au/legis/sa/num_act/npawa56o1972293/npawa56o1972293.html |access-date=16 February 2019 |publisher= Government of South Australia}}</ref>

In the years 1972–1992, the national park increased in size by the addition of land at Stamford Hill (whose original [[Barngarla language|Barngarla]] name was ''Gaidyaba''<ref>[[Ghil'ad Zuckermann|Zuckermann, Ghil'ad]] and the Barngarla (2019), [https://www.adelaide.edu.au/directory/ghilad.zuckermann?dsn=directory.file;field=data;id=41076;m=view''Barngarlidhi Manoo (Speaking Barngarla Together)''], Barngarla Language Advisory Committee. ([https://www.adelaide.edu.au/directory/ghilad.zuckermann?dsn=directory.file;field=data;id=41096;m=view ''Barngarlidhi Manoo'' – Part II])</ref>{{rp|78}}), Cape Donington, Wanna and many of the islands adjoining the coast of the Jussieu Peninsula. The Lincoln Conservation Reserve which was proclaimed in 1993 under the ''Crown Lands Act'' 1929, was added to the national park's management regime and subsequently removed after the declaration of the reserve as the [[Lincoln Conservation Park]]. In June 1999, the boundary of the national park was extended down to [[Mean low water spring|Mean Low Water Mark]].<ref name="DEH-2004"/>{{rp|7}}

In 2004, a parcel of land consisting of land around [[Memory Cove]] and the following islands - [[Hopkins Island|Hopkins]], [[Lewis Island (South Australia)|Lewis]], [[Little Island (South Australia)|Little]], [[Smith Island (South Australia)|Smith]] and [[Williams Island (South Australia)|Williams]], was excised from the national park and established as a separate protected area under the ''Wilderness Protection Act 1992'' (SA) and with the name, the Memory Cove Wilderness Protection Area.<ref name="DEH-2004"/>{{rp|7}}<ref>DEH, 2007, pages 1-2</ref>
