Carl Cummins was appointed to fill the vacant seat of John Fisher, who had died in September 2013, after the deadline to remove his name from the ballot and who won a seat in the November 2013 general election. As of March 2011, there were a total of 1,897 registered voters in Liberty Township, of which 386 (20.3% vs. 21.5% countywide) were registered as [[Democratic Party (United States)|Democrats]], 768 (40.5% vs. 35.3%) were registered as [[Republican Party (United States)|Republicans]] and 742 (39.1% vs. 43.1%) were registered as [[Unaffiliated (New Jersey)|Unaffiliated]].
