Lexington is the principal city of the Lexington, Nebraska [[Lexington micropolitan area|Micropolitan Statistical Area]], which consists of Dawson and [[Gosper County, Nebraska|Gosper]] counties.

The population density was 2,041.0 per square mile (788.7/km{{sup|2}}). There were 3,731 housing units at an average density of 735.9 per square mile (284.4/km{{sup|2}}). The racial makeup was 33.38% (3,454) [[White (U.S. Census)|white]], 10.43% (1,079) [[African American (U.S. Census)|black or African-American]], 2.11% (218) [[Native American (U.S. Census)|Native American]], 1.13% (117) [[Asian (U.S. Census)|Asian]], 0.17% (18) [[Pacific Islander (U.S. Census)|Pacific Islander]], 36.76% (3,804) from [[Race (United States Census)|other races]], and 16.02% (1,658) from two or more races. [[Hispanic (U.S. Census)|Hispanic]] or [[Latino (U.S. Census)|Latino]] of any race was 60.0% (6,121) of the population.

Of the 3,531 households, 43.3% had children under the age of 18; 49.8% were married couples living together; 19.5% had a female householder with no husband present. 18.1% of households consisted of individuals and 7.8% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.8 and the average family size was 3.3.

29.5% of the population was under the age of 18, 9.5% from 18 to 24, 29.3% from 25 to 44, 19.9% from 45 to 64, and 9.1% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 31.2 years. [[Hispanic (U.S. Census)|Hispanic]] or [[Latino (U.S. Census)|Latino]] people of any race were 51.15% of the population.
