==In opposition, 1951–1964==
After Labour lost power in the [[1951 United Kingdom general election|1951 general election]], Callaghan, who was popular with Labour MPs, was elected to the Shadow Cabinet, and he would serve on the party's front bench for the next 29 years, either in opposition or in government. He was now associated with the [[Gaitskellite]] wing of the party on the Labour right, although he avoided joining any faction.{{sfn|Conroy|2006|pp=24–31}} He served as the Labour spokesman on Transport (1951–53); Fuel and Power (1953–55); Colonial Affairs (1956–61) and Shadow Chancellor (1961–64). He ran unsuccessfully for the Deputy Leadership of the party [[1960 Labour Party deputy leadership election|in 1960]].
