===Economic development=== The [[Hornchurch Marsh]] was used for cattle grazing and became popular with butchers, [[inn]] owners and others in the [[City of London]] and by the 19th century it had become famous for the quality of the cattle sent to the [[Smithfield Market|London meat market]].<ref>Mackay, C.
