The [[population density]] was {{convert|351.2|PD/sqmi}}. There were 119,138&nbsp;housing units at an average density of {{convert|149.1|/sqmi}}. The racial makeup of the county was 88.2&nbsp;percent [[Race and ethnicity in the United States Census|White]], 7.2&nbsp;percent [[Race and ethnicity in the United States Census|Black or African American]], 0.2&nbsp;percent [[Race and ethnicity in the United States Census|Native American]], 1.1&nbsp;percent [[Race and ethnicity in the United States Census|Asian]], 0.03&nbsp;percent [[Race and ethnicity in the United States Census|Pacific Islander]], 1.2&nbsp;percent from [[Race and ethnicity in the United States Census|other races]], and 2.1&nbsp;percent from two or more races. A further 3.4&nbsp;percent of the population were [[Race and ethnicity in the United States Census|Hispanic or Latino]] of any race. 24.4% were of [[german people|German]], 12.5% [[polish people|Polish]], 12.3% [[italian people|Italian]], 10.1% [[irish people|Irish]], 6.5% [[english people|English]] and 6.4% [[Americans|American]] ancestry.

Of the total number of household, 27.2&nbsp;percent had children under the age of 18 living with them, 45.4&nbsp;percent were [[Marriage|married couples]] living together, 13.2&nbsp;percent had a female householder with no husband present, and 36.4&nbsp;percent were non-families. 29.3&nbsp;percent of all households were made up of individuals, and 11.3&nbsp;percent had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.42 and the average family size was 3.00.

In the county, the population was spread out, with 26.5&nbsp;percent under the age of 20. The median age was 38.6&nbsp;years. For every 100&nbsp;females there were 96.73&nbsp;males.
