Apart from his political career, Tompkins was an active Freemason throughout his life. He also served as the first Sovereign Grand Commander of the [[Supreme Council, Scottish Rite, Northern Jurisdiction, USA|Northern Masonic Jurisdiction]] [[Scottish Rite]], a branch of [[Freemasonry]].
