In the species ''[[Dictyostelid|Dictyostelium discoideum]]'', cAMP acts outside the cell as a secreted signal.  The [[chemotaxis|chemotactic]] aggregation of cells is organized by periodic waves of cAMP that propagate between cells over distances as large as several centimetres.
