The congressional election coincided with the [[1872 United States presidential election]]. Harrison (the Democratic congressional nominee) was listed on a local ticket that also included [[Liberal Republican Party (United States)|Liberal Republican Party]] presidential nominee [[Horace Greeley]].<ref name="secondcongressionalitspoliticalstatus"/>
