During the [[Hellenistic period]], this method was further developed by [[Archimedes]] ({{c.|lk=no|287|212}}{{nbsp}}BC), who combined it with a concept of the [[Cavalieri's principle|indivisibles]]βa precursor to [[Archimedes use of infinitesimals|infinitesimals]]βallowing him to solve several problems now treated by integral calculus.
