===Population boom===
The population grew from 710 in 1890 to 5,220 in 1910 due for the most part to industries that relied on natural resources.<ref name="Brewster County, Texas"/>

From the turn of the 20th century through [[World War II]], the Terlingua Mining District, west of the Chisos Mountains, was a boom town due to the extraction of [[cinnabar]], a mercury ore.
